Is it more economic and environmentally friendly to turn your household boiler off at night?

I have a housemate who thinks it would be more environmentally friendly and that we'd save money. But, wouldn't it work in the opposite way, as the boiler has to keep on using energy to heat up all the water from a cold temperature?
