Why was Gandhi extraordinary?

Gandhi was able to unite India. Previously, India was ruled by several different kings and kingdoms. However, he brought them together to oppose the British Rule. Gandhi also taught people how to manufacture their own goods/products (self sufficient), so they would not have to depend on Britain for things such as salt.
