Skateboard helmet for snowboarding?

Ive recently been looking into snowboard helmets because i never have worn one, and wanted to be safer out on the hill. I dont have enough money for a snowboard helmet, and they just dont seem to fit my head right. Would it be ok to wear a skate helmet snowboarding?, i dont have to worry about being cold, but is it safe, Its better than not wearing a helmet at all right? I wear a beanie under it so it fits very snug and doesnt move around. I just want some opinions on what you guys think about this. thanks :D
